What is Above Ground Level (AGL)?
Above Ground Level (AGL) is a vertical measurement that describes how high an object is in relation to the ground directly beneath it. Unlike sea level references, AGL reflects the localized elevation at a specific point on the ground; your 0.0m reference point, which is also known as the baseplane.
In tower inspections, AGL height determines the exact vertical position of antennas, radio units, lighting systems, and platforms with respect to the baseplane. Both tower companies and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) rely on accurate AGL altitude to confirm asset positions, align with engineering drawings, and ensure reported equipment heights are consistent across systems.
Why the baseplane matters
The AGL elevation depends entirely on where the 0.0m reference baseplane is defined. This could be the concrete slab beneath the structure, a platform level, a structural bolt, or the surrounding terrain. AGL is sometimes defined differently between regions and organizations, so alignment is key. If different stakeholders use different baselines, even small variations can cause mismatched AGL height data across drone imagery, site surveys, engineering drawings, and compliance reports.
Misaligned baseplanes can lead to offset antenna height reporting, sector placement errors, or delays during audits and lease renewals.

AGL examples and considerations
- Uneven terrain: Slopes or dips beneath towers can skew height measurements if the reference point shifts.
- Tall structures on slabs: AGL measured from a slab may differ from drawings starting from a fixed base.
- Adjacent towers, different grades: Two nearby towers may have different AGL 0.0m levels due to terrain elevation differences.
- Post-storm re-inspections: Terrain shifts (e.g., erosion) can alter the original reference.
